Steve Payne and the Art of Synaesthesia

Steve Payne is a 64 year old artist and musician from Whitley Bay, Tyne and Wear.
In his early twenties he was involved in a motorcycle accident where he received a severe blow to the head which induced temporary synaesthesia.

The nature of his synaesthesia was a blending of the aural and visual areas of his brain or, to put it more plainly, he could see sounds as beautiful and vivid patterns superimposed on his normal vision. Sadly this condition faded after several weeks but Steve never forgot this strange beautiful experience.

Over the years Steve has tried to reproduce those patterns that he experienced but he was never able to really do them justice on canvas.

At 36 he was diagnosed with a serious heart condition and fitted with a Pacemaker, he is currently being kept alive by his fourth and has survived seven heart attacks over the last 28 years along with several serious motorcycle accidents and has therefore had quite a lot of time off work to develop his artistic and musical talents!

Three years ago he discovered Acrylic Paint Pouring, a painting technique that finally allowed him to put those patterns down in a way that really reflects the synaesthesia that he experienced all those years ago.

His paintings are visually stunning and, best of all, each one is totally unique and ambiguous allowing the viewer to project their own interpretation onto each piece.
